The direct answer: it records everything, all the time, to a hard drive inside your house, and gives you one timeline to search across every camera. That is the whole proposition, and it is a fundamentally different product from a cloud camera that saves thirty-second clips when something moves.
The practical difference shows up when you actually need footage. With clip-based cloud recording you get what the detection algorithm decided was worth keeping. With continuous NVR recording you get the four minutes before the event, which is frequently where the useful information is — the car that circled the block twice, the person who walked past three times first. Channels: Buy More Than You Need
Channel count is the number of cameras a recorder can accept, and it is the specification buyers most often get wrong. Almost nobody stops at their original camera count. The fifth camera should cost an entry-level amount, not a system-replacement amount.
The practical mapping: most houses need four cameras — front door, driveway, back door, and whichever side has a gate or low fence. Six is the point at which owners stop finding new blind spots. So an 8-channel recorder is the sensible default for a house, leaving two to four spare channels for the additions you have not thought of yet. A property with outbuildings, a shop or a long driveway wants a 16-channel recorder, which is the only configuration that still has room after the property changes.
