The direct answer: 2K (roughly 4MP, 2560×1440) is the right default for most outdoor positions, 1080p is genuinely sufficient indoors and at close range, and 4K only earns its price on wide scenes — a long driveway, an open backyard, a parking area — where you need to identify someone thirty or forty feet from the lens. Anything beyond 4K in a consumer home camera is marketing.
The reason resolution advice feels contradictory is that resolution alone is the wrong unit. What actually determines whether footage is useful is pixel density on the subject — how many pixels land on a face at the distance the subject will be. That depends on three things together: the sensor’s resolution, the lens field of view, and how far away the person is. Change any one and the answer changes. A 1080p camera framed on a doorway outperforms a 4K camera framed on an entire street, every time.

Resolution by Use Case
Indoor rooms, hallways, nurseries, pet monitoring: 1080p is fine. Distances are short, lighting is controlled, and the subject fills a usable share of the frame. Spend the money you save on a better lens, local storage, or a model without a subscription requirement instead. The category detail sits in best indoor security cameras.
Front door, porch, entry path: 1080p works, 2K is comfortable. A visitor at a door is typically within ten feet, which is the easiest identification scenario in the whole category. 2K adds useful headroom for digital zoom into a package label or a hand at a doorknob.
Driveway, side yard, garage approach: 2K. This is where 1080p starts to run out. You are covering twenty-five to fifty feet, often with a wide lens, and 2K roughly doubles the linear detail on a face at that range compared to 1080p. It is the best value point in the category and it is where most well-regarded outdoor cameras have landed.
Wide backyard, long driveway, acreage, multi-bay parking: 4K, or better, two 2K cameras. If the scene is genuinely large, extra pixels help. But before buying 4K, price the alternative: two 2K cameras covering halves of the same area almost always produce better identification than one 4K camera covering all of it, because each one is closer to its subject. Splitting the coverage beats upscaling the sensor more often than people expect. Where 4K does make sense as a single unit, it usually comes bundled with the larger sensors and better optics found in premium cameras.
One rule of thumb worth carrying to the store: a face is reliably recognizable at roughly ten to fifteen feet on 1080p with a normal lens, around twenty to twenty-five feet on 2K, and thirty-five to forty-five feet on 4K. Beyond those distances you are recording that an event happened, not who did it.
The Field-of-View Tradeoff Nobody Mentions on the Box
Two cameras with identical sensors can produce completely different usable detail, and the variable is the lens. A 4K camera with a 180-degree ultra-wide lens spreads its pixels across a scene three times as wide as a 4K camera with a 90-degree lens — which means, on any given face, the wide-angle model delivers roughly a third of the detail. In practice a narrow-lens 2K camera frequently beats a fisheye 4K one.
Ultra-wide lenses carry a second cost: barrel distortion. Faces stretch toward the edges and straight lines bow, so the corners people buy the wide lens for are the least usable part of the picture.
The sequence, then: decide the area you must cover, choose the narrowest lens that covers it, then choose the resolution that gives adequate density at your subject distance. Done in reverse, you end up with a high-resolution wide-angle camera and a smudge at the far fence. If one camera cannot cover the area with a reasonable lens, the answer is a second camera, not a wider one.
What Higher Resolution Actually Costs You
Resolution is not a one-time purchase price. It is a recurring cost in three places, and this is where 4K quietly stops being free.
Storage. Every doubling of resolution roughly doubles the bitrate, and therefore the storage. As a rough working figure for motion-triggered recording at typical residential event volumes, a 1080p camera lands somewhere around 10 to 25 GB a month, 2K around 20 to 45 GB, and 4K around 45 to 100 GB. Continuous 24/7 recording multiplies all of these several times over. On a microSD card that means 4K may hold only a few days of history where 2K holds a week or more — and the oldest clips are silently overwritten. Upload bandwidth. Cloud-recording cameras push every clip out over your home internet’s upload channel, which on many US connections is a small fraction of the download speed. Subscription tiers. Some platforms gate higher-resolution cloud recording behind a more expensive plan, so the resolution you bought is not necessarily the resolution being stored off-site.
Four Things That Matter More Than Resolution
- Low-light performance. Most incidents happen after dark. A larger sensor and a spotlight for color night video change footage quality far more than pixel count — and, as noted above, more pixels on the same sensor size can actively hurt.
- Frame rate. Detail is worthless if motion is a blur. Many cameras quietly drop to 15fps or lower at their maximum resolution, so the 4K mode you paid for may be the mode least able to freeze a person walking past.
- Dynamic range. A backlit doorway or a sunlit driveway with deep shade is a contrast problem, not a resolution problem. HDR handling decides whether a face is visible or a silhouette.
- Lens position and mounting height. Seven to nine feet, angled to catch faces, gets more out of a 1080p camera than gutter height gets out of a 4K one. See our installation guide.
