Short version: a Blink camera that shows online but isn’t producing clips is almost always a settings issue (system not armed, wrong activity zone, motion sensitivity too low) rather than a hardware fault. Work through the app’s arming and detection settings before assuming the camera itself is broken.

Blink’s flagship outdoor camera, with a solid owner rating, where recording relies on both the camera’s settings and the Sync Module. A depleted battery or a paused Sync Module are the most common causes of missed recordings.

Check the System Is Armed, Not Just the Camera

Blink’s arm/disarm status applies at the system level, not per camera — a camera can be powered on and connected while the system it belongs to is disarmed, in which case it won’t record motion events at all, only live view on demand. Open the Blink app and confirm the system toggle shows Armed, not just that the individual camera appears online.

Motion Detection Sensitivity and Zones

If the system is armed but a specific area isn’t triggering recordings, check the camera’s motion sensitivity setting (too low and it misses movement, especially at distance) and its activity zone or masked-out areas, which can be configured to ignore motion in parts of the frame — a common cause when a driveway or street edge stopped triggering after setup but the rest of the yard still works.

Retrigger Time and Clip Limits

Blink cameras have a configurable retrigger interval that pauses new recordings for a set period after a clip, to avoid dozens of near-identical clips from continuous motion — if this is set to a long interval, it can look like the camera "missed" activity that happened shortly after a previous clip. Shortening the retrigger time in the camera’s settings fixes this for high-traffic areas.

Storage and Subscription Limits

Confirm you haven’t hit your cloud storage or clip-count limit for your current plan tier, and if using a Sync Module 2 with local USB storage, check that drive isn’t full. Both cases silently stop new recordings rather than throwing an obvious error in the app, which is why they’re easy to miss.

If It’s Still Not Recording

If the system is armed, zones and sensitivity look correct, and storage isn’t full, try a Sync Module reset — see how to reset a Blink camera. For the wider decision on whether Blink’s subscription tiers are worth adding for your household, see is Blink worth it.

Straight Answers

Frequently Asked

Does Blink record without a subscription?

Yes, with limits. Every Blink camera gets a free rolling window of cloud clip storage without a paid plan, but the exact allowance and clip length are more restricted than the paid Blink Subscription Plus tier, which adds longer clips, richer person detection and multi-camera libraries. If clips have stopped appearing entirely rather than just feeling short, that points to a settings or connectivity issue rather than the free tier’s normal limits.

Why does my Blink camera detect motion but not save a clip?

This usually means motion detection is enabled but the camera’s arming schedule or activity zone is set in a way that suppresses recording for that specific movement, or the camera hit its clip retention limit and is overwriting older footage before you checked. Confirm the system is armed (not just "detecting") in the app, and check that the motion happened inside an active zone rather than a masked-out area.

Can a full SD card or Sync Module storage stop recording?

Yes — if you’re using a Sync Module 2 with a USB drive for local storage, a full drive stops new clips from saving until older ones are cleared or the drive is swapped. Check the Sync Module’s local storage status in the app; this is separate from your Blink cloud subscription allowance.
