The direct answer: no — most consumer security cameras do not record all the time. The typical battery or WiFi camera sits asleep, wakes when it detects motion, records a clip of perhaps ten to sixty seconds, saves or uploads it, and goes back to sleep. Continuous 24/7 recording is a different capability, and it belongs almost exclusively to mains-powered cameras: wired cameras writing to a local card, PoE cameras writing to a recorder, and NVR systems. A handful of brands also sell a cloud-based continuous recording tier as a paid upgrade.
This is the single most common misunderstanding in the category, and owners usually discover it at the worst possible moment — going to look for the footage of something that happened overnight and finding a series of clips with gaps between them, or nothing at all. It is worth resolving before you buy, because the answer is structural: you cannot really retrofit continuous recording onto a battery camera. How Motion-Triggered Recording Actually Behaves
A motion-triggered camera does four things in sequence: detect, wake, record, upload. Each step introduces a way to lose footage.
The pre-trigger gap. By the time detection fires and the sensor is running, the subject is often already inside the frame. Better cameras buffer a few seconds of pre-roll footage so the clip starts before the trigger; cheaper ones do not, which is why so many clips open with a person mid-stride. The cooldown. Many cameras enforce a gap between recordings to protect battery and bandwidth. During that window, movement is not recorded. On a busy position with a short clip length, a continuous three-minute event can arrive as two clips and a hole.
Detection limits. Passive infrared sensors respond to heat crossing the field, and they are less reliable with slow movement, movement directly toward the camera, movement at the far edge of range, and movement on a hot day when the background temperature is close to body temperature. Software-based detection has its own failure modes at low light. Either way, the honest framing is that motion detection is very good, not perfect.
What you gain. Motion recording is not a defect; it is a sensible trade. It makes battery cameras viable at all, it keeps storage and upload requirements small, and it produces a timeline of discrete events you can actually scroll through, rather than hours of an empty driveway. For most households, most of the time, it is enough. It stops being enough the moment you need to answer “what happened between midnight and 6am” rather than “show me the person at the door.”
Which Cameras Genuinely Record 24/7
Wired cameras with local storage. A camera on a permanent power supply writing to a microSD card can record continuously and loop over the oldest footage when the card fills. This is the cheapest route to genuine 24/7 recording, and it is available on many mainstream local-storage cameras. The constraint is card capacity, which decides how far back the history goes.
PoE cameras. Power over Ethernet delivers power and data down a single cable, which means no battery to conserve and no WiFi upload to ration. PoE cameras are the standard professional choice for continuous recording, they do not consume household WiFi bandwidth, and they do not drop clips when the network is busy. NVR systems. A network video recorder is the mature answer: several cameras wired to a box with a hard drive, recording continuously, with no monthly fee and a searchable timeline covering weeks rather than days. This is what people are usually picturing when they imagine security footage — a scrubbable record of everything, not a folder of clips. Cloud continuous recording tiers. Several brands sell continuous cloud recording as a premium plan on their mains-powered cameras. It works, it requires the camera to be plugged in, and it uses meaningful upload bandwidth around the clock. Read the retention window carefully, because a continuous plan with a short history can keep less usable footage than motion clips with a long one.
Battery cameras. Effectively never, for the reason set out above — a permanently running sensor and radio empties a pack in hours. What Each Route Costs, Including the Subscription
The recording question and the subscription question are the same question wearing different clothes, and that is worth being blunt about.
On the mainstream cloud brands — Ring, Arlo, Google Nest, Blink — motion clips themselves are generally gated behind a paid plan. Without it you typically get live view and a notification, and the clip is either kept briefly or not at all. Plans commonly run a modest monthly fee for one camera and more for a whole household, and a continuous recording tier where offered sits above that. Over five years a two-camera household frequently pays more in fees than it paid for the hardware. On the local-storage side — Eufy, Reolink, Wyze, TP-Link Tapo, and every PoE and NVR setup — the recording is yours with no recurring bill. Continuous recording to a card or a drive costs you the price of the card or the drive and nothing after that. The trade-offs are real rather than imaginary: remote access can be clunkier, a stolen camera takes its own card with it unless there is a hub, and you own the drive when it eventually fails.
The reason this decision cannot be deferred is that it is not really reversible. A camera bought into a cloud ecosystem generally cannot be pointed at your own recorder, and a PoE system cannot be un-cabled. Choosing Between Them
Motion recording is the right answer if what you want is to know who came to the door, whether a parcel arrived, and what happened in the yard — and if you want an install that takes twenty minutes and no cable. That covers a large majority of households and every rental.
Continuous recording is the right answer if you need to reconstruct a sequence rather than review an event: a driveway where vehicles come and go, a property with a history of incidents, anything where the useful footage is the five minutes before the alert rather than the clip itself, or any position where you want a searchable timeline weeks deep. In that case start from NVR camera systems and accept the cabling as the price of the capability.
A workable middle path that a lot of owners land on: continuous recording on the one position that matters most, usually the driveway or the main approach, and motion-triggered battery cameras everywhere else.
